Box Hill wastes chances

BOX Hill football manager Greg Boxall blamed poor disposal and wasteful goal-kicking for a VFL loss the Hawks should have avoided.

The Hawks, despite having a whopping 75 more disposals, lost to the Tasmania Devils, 13.10 (88) to 12.13 (85), at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

The home side led by 17 points at half-time but was unable to push on in the second half.

However, the half-time margin should have been more as the Hawks kicked an appalling 1.9 before getting their act together with six consecutive goals leading into the main break.

Although the Hawks continued to dominate possession, their skills let them down.

New life in Devils

ENDING the partial alliance with the Kangaroos has revived the Devils' spirit, says Tasmania's five-goal hero Alex Gilmour.

The Devils returned to the VFL winning list with a three-point victory over Box Hill on Sunday, despite holding the same lead at the final change and kicking into a strong wind.

"I always thought the best thing for Tasmanian footy would be as a stand-alone club," Gilmour said yesterday.

"The group is together, a close group centralised down here in Hobart.

"There is nobody flying in, flying out, trying to get AFL games, playing for themselves. It is just a group of Tasmanians all going in the one direction trying to get the same result."

PORT Melbourne delivered a sweet one-point victory over Sandringham at TEAC Oval on Saturday.

Coming off a 13-point loss to Collingwood in the opening round, Port remained confident despite going into time-on 16 points down.

Kicking to the old grandstand end with a breeze, new coach Gary Ayres said he knew if the team continued to play "controlled footy" it would prevail.

Adrian Bonaddio (three goals), Toby Pinwell and Luke Cotchett (three goals) brought the Borough home.

"I told the players this was eight quarters worth of work," Ayres said of the approach the team took into the first two matches.

Ayres was joyous at the effort in the second quarter when John Baird, Ryan McMahon and Sam Pleming were off the ground getting facial abrasions fixed. Sandy put on three goals while the midfield drive was restricted.

Geelong VFL Coach expects better effort

From the Geelong Advertiser
Full article Click here

AN 'embarrassed' Geelong VFL side will be out to get its season back on track when the Cats host Werribee at Skilled Stadium on Sunday morning.

Coach Leigh Tudor said his players were embarrassed by their performance in the opening round against Coburg last week and were determined to use this week's match against Werribee to prove their doubters wrong.

"It wasn't an acceptable performance by quite a few of them and they know that," Tudor said.

"They're pretty keen to get back out there as quick as they can and show the footy world that they're much better than what they showed last week."

The Cats are coming off a 75-point drubbing at the hands of Coburg, but Tudor conceded there was still teething problems as they adjusted to a vastly different line-up.

WILLIAMSTOWN beat its former friend, now foe, Collingwood, by 68 points yesterday, while Port Melbourne fought hard against Sandringham to win by one point.

The Seagulls kicked nine goals to one in the final term to turn a 21-point three-quarter-time margin into a 68-point thrashing, 25.12 (162) to 14.10 (94).

Williamstown's four big forwards were a handful for Collingwood's defence at Burbank Oval, with Patrick Rose kicking five goals, Dean Galea four and three each to Wayde Skipper and Callum Urch.

Seagulls coach Bradley Gotch said Williamstown's forward line was the side's strength.

"We're going to be hard to match up on for most sides if we can keep rotating around and not be too predictable," Gotch said. "I think that's our strength at the minute."

WILLIAMSTOWN coach Bradley Gotch has admitted to "mixed feelings" leading into his side's round-two match against Collingwood.

Williamstown was aligned with Collingwood's AFL side for six years before the club decided to create a stand-alone VFL team.

Gotch, who coached the Seagulls and had a role at the Magpies during that time, said it felt odd looking at his former players as the opposition.

"After being there for eight years," Gotch said, "and I coached Williamstown and Collingwood for six, it was sort of a funny feeling having a look at the opposition, which is the team you've had a big involvement with."

Gotch said he has used his inside knowledge of the club's players to give his team an edge.
