From the Hoppers Crossing Star
Reported by Mark Murray

WILLIAMSTOWN Football Club veteran Andrew Williams has departed Burbank Oval to join Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League Casey-Cardinia league club Beaconsfield.

Williams, who played his first game for the Seagulls in their 2003 grand final win, lives locally in Beaconsfield and has decided to step away from Victorian Football League (VFL) competition.

The former Collingwood forward was named vice-captain of Williamstown in 2007 and enjoyed another consistent season as a goal-kicking half forward/midfielder.

Williams went on to notch up 70 games for the Seagulls, booting 99 goals.

PORT Melbourne gained its first significant signature  for the 2008 VFL season when former Brisbane and Carlton big man Dylan McLaren put pen to paper last Tuesday.

With  David Fanning,  McLaren will  give the Boroughs an imposing  ruck combination.

The  25-year-old told Port coach Gary  Ayres  that he wanted to play in a successful side. "It's always  positive to hear that," Ayres said last Wednesday.

"It tells you he's got his head right. He's fairly clear about what he wants to do and how he can contribute. He wants to play  a major part in taking the club forward."

McLaren's friendship with  another  former Blue, Luke Livingston, influenced his decision to join the Boroughs.

The 196cm right-footer is coming  off two years at Carlton where he  played 13 games, all of them in 2006.  He joined the Blues after 46 senior appearances for the Brisbane Lions between 2001-2005.

ANZAC Day treat

TASMANIA returns to its traditional VFL Anzac Day match for the first time in four years following the release of the 2008 fixture list yesterday.

With Anzac Day falling on a Friday next year, the Devils will clash with Casey Scorpions at Bellerive in round five for premiership points.

The club has always promoted the Anzac Day round -- usually with a match against Frankston -- but will play on the day for the first time since handing North Ballarat a 77-point hiding at North Hobart in 2004.

The Devils open next season with two away games against Bendigo and Box Hill -- the only two sides it defeated in 2007. Home-and-away matches have been evenly split, with Collingwood's decision to field a stand-alone VFL side increasing the roster season to 20 matches.

However, the Devils have the opportunity to "buy" home games, and Coburg has shown interest in selling its match on June 14.
