Willy fires up after home truths from coach

A POWERFUL three quarter-time spray from Williamstown coach Brad Gotch was enough to inspire the ladder-leaders to a gritty 14-point win against Frankston at Burbank Oval yesterday.

Gotch was disgusted at his troops inability to win the contested ball as Frankston took a 14-point lead into the final term and looked like inflicting Willy with just its second loss of the season.

But Gotch\'s words hit the right buttons as the Seagulls, aided by the work rate of David Stretton and Western Bulldogs utility Jarrod Harbrow, piled on five unanswered goals to win 18.13 (121) to 16.11 (107).

"I don\'t rev them up too often, but I was just disappointed with their attitude at three-quarter time," Gotch said.

"They were really down on themselves and we were only 14 points down so I just asked for a little bit more.

WILLIAMSTOWN held top position on the VFL ladder with a hard-fought 14-point victory over a spirited Frankston at Burbank Oval yesterday.

The Seagulls looked sluggish early, with the Dolphins kicking seven goals to three in the first term through hard running and midfield pressure.

With Jason Cloke being well held by Dolphin captain Shaun Pollard, it was left to Dean Galea to provide a target for attacking backmen Malcolm Lynch and Jarrod Harbrow, who were instrumental in their side\'s eight-goals-to-three second quarter.

New spirit as Devils bite

IT was arguably the greatest win in the Devils\' eight-year history -- daylight robbery based on pure passion and emotion.

At half-time at Burnie\'s West Park the Devils trailed fifth-placed Coburg by six goals and again halfway through the last term by 24 points.

But the Devils found something irrepressible and booted the last five goals of the game into the wind to win by a goal -- 15.11 (101) to 13.17 (95).

The final siren saw the team erupt in jubilation in front of the crowd of 3200 and the coaching staff spill out onto the ground to join their charges.

Scorpions too strong for Zebras

\Photo: Rob Carew\CASEY Scorpions stepped out of one top-eight logjam and into another with a tenacious 31-point win against arch-rival Sandringham at Casey Fields yesterday. The Scorpions now join North Ballarat and Port Melbourne on equal points locked for second place.

Only percentage separated third-placed Sandringham and fourth-placed Casey before yesterday\'s VFL match of the round, and for three quarters little separated the two clubs on the field.

With Sandringham goal-machine Nick Sautner still sidelined with injury and St Kilda half-forward Charlie Gardiner a late call-up to the senior side only hours before the bounce of the ball, the game looked likely to boil down to a battle of the back lines. Casey\'s young defence, headed by Alex Silvagni and James Wall, was ranked No. 1 in the VFL before yesterday\'s game, having conceded only 741 points during the first nine rounds.

Scorpions could be a stand-alone club in 2009

CASEY Scorpions president John Sharkie says it is not a given that his club will strike an alignment deal with the City of Casey-bound Melbourne.

With St Kilda ditching the Scorpions last week to enter a five-year agreement with Sandringham, there is an expectation in VFL circles that Casey and the Demons will get together.

But Sharkie said it was not a fait accompli and that the Scorpions would be prepared to go it alone next season. He said he had already discussed with VFL bosses a financial assistance package if Casey went without an AFL affiliate.

Sharkie said Melbourne first had to find about $350,000 to seal a move to become a co-tenant at Casey Fields, and then commit to a joint community projects program. "Don\'t assume anything. It\'s not over the line by any stretch," Sharkie said. "We won\'t be rushed into anything. It all has to be done properly."
