VFL Greeted by Atrocious Conditions at the G

Fifty-one collective scoring shots produced only seventeen goals, in a rugged, rain affected encounter that saw Coburg repeat the dose of round one, triumphing over an out-of-form Geelong by 34 points at the MCG.
By the time play got underway at the MCG at around 11am, the rain had well and truly set in. The MCG surface was uncharacteristically playing poorly and for a vast majority like an ice-skating rink. Both Coburg and Geelong had extreme difficulty at ground-level with both sides failing to capitalise on opportunities presented to them in the first term, the scores were level at the break.
Coburg gained the ascendancy early in the second through goals from Collins and Pettifer. Geelong hadn’t quite mastered the rub of the green, which caused them many turnovers and costly errors. Fantastic work from the Cat defence comprising of David Johnson, Adam Donohue and Chris Kangars managed to repel countless Coburg forward movements, leaving the Cats a respectable ten points in-a-rears at the major break.
The Tigers turned up the heat in the third slamming on two quick goals. Every contest was being won by Coburg and their fierce endeavour was outstanding, players diving in for the footy left, right and centre, putting their bodies on the line, Natale Caruso, as he always does, lead the hard-men into battle. On the contrary Geelong broke down across half-forward and also struggled in front of goal, kicking six behinds for the quarter. The margin had blown out to 29 points.
Jarrad Silvester capped of his wonderful best on ground performance by going on a few daring runs up the ground that resulted in goals to Pettifer and Connors, sealing the deal for the Tigers, mid-way through the final term. Geelong will trudge back down the high-way to Kardinia Park with their tail between their legs, after putting in a disappointing performance that doesn’t live up to the high standards of the reigning VFL premiers. Good efforts from Varcoe, Johnson, Laidler and especially young Adam Donohue, were not to go unnoticed. The victory injects the Tigers into the top four with a healthy percentage to boot, the ability around the packs of Horne, Shelton, Carnell and tenacity shown by Collins, Pettifer and Fort Caruso really stands Coburg in good stead for a red-hot crack at the VFL finals series.
