Port Melbourne appoint Adam Skrobalak VFL Senior Coach

SKROBALAK APPOINTED VFL HEAD COACH

Sep 23, 2021 | News

The Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Skrobalak as the club’s 2022 VFL Head Coach.

Adam comes to the club with a wealth of experience gained across the Local, VFL, and AFL landscape. Adam was an assistant coach at the Borough in 2012 and most recently had 7 years at St Kilda FC.

Paul Malcolm (CEO & member of the Football Sub Committee responsible for coach selection) said “When we kicked off the process to select our new coach, we had strong interest without advertising and the committee followed a structured process to ensure that we were able to select not only the best candidate for the role but the person who we felt would be best suited to the Port Melbourne Football Club and who could hit the ground running. From the outset, Adam showed a determination to take on the role and was impressed at each stage of the recruitment process. I am more than comfortable that Adam will provide a program and game plan that will help ensure that we as a club are successful and competitive into the future”.

Life Member & Premiership Captain, Toby Pinwill (also on the Sub Committee) said “Adam impressed at every stage of the process with his professionalism and attention to detail. He displayed an outstanding knowledge of the VFL and outlined a clear path to success for the PMFC. Adam comes highly regarded from his time at St Kilda with exemplary references. It’s great to be able to welcome back a former member of the Borough family to the club.”

When told of his appointment Adam Said “I’m truly honoured to be given the opportunity to coach such a proud and strong football club. Having been an assistant coach here in 2012 under Gary Ayres I understand the culture of the club and its loyal supporters.

We have an opportunity to roll our sleeves up and work as one to get the club back into finals football. I’m looking forward to meeting all the players and staff and setting a vision to take the club forward.

The club provided a great interview process which showed just how serious this great football club is about rebounding quickly and creating a great environment for players to develop and achieve success. I look forward to meeting you all over the coming months”.

The Board welcome Adam to the Borough and we look forward to Adam starting with us on the 4th of October and to the season ahead.

Congratulations to Adam.  I look forward to hearing him speak at the AGM in December to outline his philosophy and direction for the club in 2022.

Our recruitment over the next couple of months will tell us a lot about where the club is headed.

I wish him well, has big shoes to fill and will be compared to Gary for a while. Definetely wont be able to attract players to the club like Gary did. Initial thoughts is that Port fans are supportive but not all are impressed with the appointment.

TORQUAY and East Geelong premiership coach Adam Skrobalak has been appointed senior coach of VFL club Port Melbourne.

Skrobalak, who recently departed St Kilda after seven seasons with the AFL club, fills the role made vacant by Gary Ayres departure from the club after 13 years in charge.

“I’m truly honoured to be given the opportunity to coach such a proud and strong football club,” Skrobalak said.

“Having been an assistant coach here in 2012 under Gary Ayres, I understand the culture of the club and its loyal supporters.

“We have an opportunity to roll our sleeves up and work as one to get the club back into finals football. I’m looking forward to meeting all the players and staff and setting a vision to take the club forward.

The club provided a great interview process which showed just how serious this great football club is about rebounding quickly and creating a great environment for players to develop and achieve success.”

Skrobalak led Torquay to the 2006 BFL title in the only instance in league history of a team coming from an elimination final to win the flag.

In 2009, he was in charge of East Geelong as it snapped a 16-year premiership drought after narrowly missed out two years prior in a thrilling decider against Belmont Lions.

Skrobalak, who coached Frankston on its return to the VFL in 2017, also guided the GDFL’s interleague campaign the previous year,

“When we kicked off the process to select our new coach, we had strong interest without advertising, and the committee followed a structured process to ensure that we were able to select not only the best candidate for the role but the person who we felt would be best suited to the Port Melbourne Football Club and who could hit the ground running,” CEO Paul Malcolm.

“From the outset, Adam showed a determination to take on the role and was impressed at each stage of the recruitment process.

“I am more than comfortable that Adam will provide a program and game plan that will help ensure that we as a club are successful and competitive into the future”.

Could turn out to be a master stroke, who knows, but i would say it's a low profile appointment for such a high profile club.

Hmm, interesting appointment. It did raise my eyebrows I must admit. Like many before him, lots of positive talk when he came to Frankston, but not much delivered. I didn't see much ingenuity or risk taking in his approach. I honestly see him as a caretaker type coach.
